Several weeks of sunny weather have provided Simon and others cause for optimism, he noted.
“If we would have continued to have rain that would have been disastrous,” Simon said. “We’ve had a spell of three or four weeks with pretty good drying conditions that has helped us out.”

Lafourche Sugars is expected to process 940,000 tons of cane this year, Nolan said, noting that figure is down 10 percent from 2007.
That number could decline further if wet or cold weather interferes with cane growth. Regardless of the conditions, Lafourche Sugars’ 80 full-time employees and 40 part-time employees are facing three busy months.
“We try to wrap up before Christmas,” Nolan said. “Some years it happens, some years it doesn’t. This will be one of those years it doesn’t.”
Veteran farmer Godfrey Knight can cope with a long year. What he hopes to avoid, however, is a year like 2002, when the rains following Hurricane Lili seemingly never stopped. Knight only planted 100 of 650 possible acres of cane that year because of the weather.
So far, Knight, who has planted cane in Thibodaux since 1956, has reason to be upbeat.
“If it stays dry, it won’t be that bad,” Knight said, as he overlooked his field near the Brule-Guillot Road.

Loading and cleaning of a ribbon mixer is usually done from the top of the trough. The discharge valve can be located at either end or in the middle of the mixture.(The manufacturers usually recommend emptying the system at the end of the mixer.) Van den Bergh points out that attention must be paid to the design of the mixers, Bearings and glands to avoid lubrication contamination. He also states that ribbon mixers are not easy to clean and not recommended for sticky materials. Because the mixing device turns over the whole charge of powder, the power demands of this type of mixer are
relatively high, thus van den Bergh gives an extimate of 12KW per 1000Kg of charge.(Many of the figures on power demands and of available capacity in industrial mixers are taken from an excellent review article by van den Bergh. One does not normally fill this type of mixer to more than 50% of the available volume. Normally the capacity of this type of mixer is restricted to an upper limit of 15.
Sometimes, to improve the dispersion of ingredients in ribbon mixer, the ribbon blades are built to be close to the cylindrical wall to give high shearing. Sometimes the ribbons are also fitted with rubber wipers to ensure complete intermingling of the ingredients by lifting any packed material near the wall into the middle of the ribbon ensemble. It is difficult to predict the scale-up performance if one attempts to increase mixing capacity by going to a larger mixer of the same type.
In a ribbon mixer the paddles move relatively slowly, as distinct from the movement in another class of mixer which is variously referred to as a paddle or a plowshare mixer.In the forberg mixer, the twin paddle system shown in figure rotates very rapidly to generate a fluidized chaotic array of the ingredients of the mixture. The forberg mixer consists of the two horizontal drums that are joined on one side. The elements consist of two shafts that retate anticlockwise along the axis of each of the two drums. Scaling up the capacity of the Forberg mixer is expensive because of its stainless steel construction.(This type of equipment has been referred to as the tossed salad approach to mixing.)
One of the advantages of the Forberg mixer is the very short mixing times; usually, 15 seconds are sufficient to achieve full mixing. There are virtually no shear forces in the mixer, so it is not suitable for use with cohesive materials. On the other hand, the way in which the powder is dumped through a bottom door often prevents segregation in the initial post-mix handling of the powder. If there are any fine components in the mixer, the way that the mixture is dumped from the Forberg mixer can give rise to fugitive emissions. Forberg mixers are available in sizes ranging from 6 dm3 up to 5 m3. The operational power requirement can be up to 50kW, but this is offset by the very short time of mixing. For some purposes the Forberg mixer can be equipped with ancillary transverse bars, as shown in figure. When the paddles are operating, the ingredients impact on the lump breaking bar to deagglomerate any lumps in the feed material. The flow distortion bar in this diagram is also known as an intersifier, since it increases the efficiency of the mixing system.The system can incorportaed a device for adding liquid to the powder ingredients. The addition of liquid may be an integral part of the ultimate mixture or it may be a technique for stabilizing the mixture via agglomeration to prevent segregation when the system is emptied and moved away from the mixer.
Another type of mixer in which the rotation of the dispersing paddles is so intense that the ingredients are suspended in the moving air to create a turbulent mixture is the Littleford mixer shown in Figure. This mixture is known in Europe by the term lodige mixer. Because the rotating paddles are shaped like plowshares to enable the paddles to keep the wall clean as the mixer operates, this type of mixer is sometimes referred to as a plowshare mixer. Nommally the equipment can be filled with a range of occupied volumes from 20% to 70% of the mixing drum. Van den Bergh states that the entire material mass moves so that power consumption is relatively high. The mixer is available in a range of sizes from 0.13 to 30M3. Mixing times are relatively short, and mixing is often complete by the time the paddles are up to top speed, so that the limiting time for the mixer is the time required for the paddles to reach top speed and then to become stationary. To increase the rate of mixing with difficult powder, and to disperse agglomeretes which can exist in the ingredients, so-called intensifier choppers are mounted in the side of the mixer and driven independently of the movement of the high-speed paddles. If cohesive powders are mixed in this equipment, it may be necessary to intimize the final mixture by passing it through a pinmill. (a)efficient mixing action-to give satisfactory blending in the minimum time,
(b)gentle mixing action-to reduce mechanical fragmentation or agglomeration to a minimum,
(c)dust-free operation-the machine should preferably be sealed,
(d)easily cleanable-surfaces should be smooth, readily accessible and free from obstructions and crevices,
(e)complete discharge-minimum of product retained in the machine,
(f)low costings-installation, running, maintenance and power usage costs must be minimal.
The choice of powder blender may be determined by the need for batch or continuous operation, single or multiple processing, and the degree of precision blending required. Sometimes the choice is a compromise but most authorities agree that for simple powder mixing the tumbler-type blender is more effective than the blade or paddle-type as it can produce the maximum product mobility with the minimum of scraping or frictional action

What is a ribbon mixer
Ribbon mixers are a basic industrial mixing tool. They consist, basically, of a trough-shaped casing (usually 2 to 3 times longer than it is wide) with a semicircular bottom, fitted with a horizontal longitudinal shaft on which are mounted arms supporting a combination of ribbon blades, paddles or helical screws set at a fairly close clearance to the semicircular mixer body so that no layer of material remains on the bottom of the mixer. The most effective design of ribbon layout is the double spiral in which the outer ribbon moves the product in one direction and the inner ribbon moves it in the opposite direction. This creates axial flow and prevents any buildup of material moved by the blades as they rotate is relatively small so that mixing times can be long. The capacity of the mixer should not be exceeded otherwise the ribbon and/or blades are not effective and the surface layers of the powder do not get adequately mixed.
Ribbon mixers are normally operated at room temperature but they may be jacketed for steam heating (at atmospheric pressure)or water cooling, should this be called for .Although ribbon mixers are relatively standard in design there are many modifications and commercial design options available depending on:(a)materials characteristics;(b)production requirements, particularly batch size and working conditions; (c)machine characteristic such as loading and unloading facilities.

The Szego grinding mill is a planetary ring-roller mill shown schematically in FIG.1. It consists principally of a stationary, cylindrical grinding surface inside which a number of helically grooved rollers rotate. These radically mobile rollers are suspended from flanges connected to the central drive shaft; they are pushed outward by centrifugal force and roll on the grinding surface.

The material is fed by gravity, or pumped into a top feed cylinder and is discharged at the bottom of the mill. The particles, upon entering the grinding section, are repeatedly crushed between the rollers and the stationary grinding surface. The crushing force is created mainly by the radial acceleration of the rollers. Shearing action is induced by the high velocity gradients generated in the mill, and hence the primary forces acting on the particles are the crushing and shearing force caused by rotational motion of the rollers. Attrition is also important, particularly in dry grinding, and impaction also occurs at higher rotational speeds.
An important feature is the ability of the roller grooves to aid the transport of material through the mill, thus providing a means to control residence time and mill capacity. This transporting action is particularly important with materials which would not readily flow by gravity. Pastes and sticky materials fall into this category.
The mill has several design variables which may be utilized to meet specific product requirements. The important variables are the number of rollers, their mass, diameter and length, and the shape, size and number of starts of the helical grooves no the rollers. As the number of rollers is increased, the product becomes finer. Heavier rollers and higher rotational speeds generate greater crushing forces and give higher reduction ratios. The ridge: groove size ratio may also be changed to increase or decrease the effective pressure acting on the particles. the common groove shapes are rectangular and tapered and the  latter will decrease the chance of particles getting stuck in the grooves.

Stone grinding mill is a tradition that goes back centuries; from the earliest times, grain was reduced to flour between a pair of stones. The rotary mills in this section, like wise, have a long history; it is rather common to see old millstones at a historic site, both in the United States, as well as abroad. During the 1880s, there was an impetus to develop small stone Behr mills. While many used special imported French stone deemed the best for flour grinding, some used certain forms of granite found in the United States. Regardless, a number of companies offered small mills for the benefit of farmers and small grain millers. A few examples are shown in this section. Unfortunately, many of the flour mill manufacturers did not advertise in the farm journals because their trade was with bona fide flour millers rather than farmers.

Today, vintage flour mills often sell at a considerable figure; a nicely restored small mill might bring up to $ 1,000. However, a mill with a poor framework or a broken stone will bring but a fraction of that figure.

Most folks preferred their corn meal and flour to be ground in a stone mill; a small burr grinder could leave the taste of iron in the finished product and that was undesirable. Even so, Appleton offered this small grinder in1917, and it was equipped with the shaker or bolter to screen the finished meal. This model is its no.4 hero pulley grinder.

The larger particles remained on the top screen, finally going to an offal pile, while the fine-grade corn meal dropped through the screen to a waiting basket.

This 1884 illustration shows the Freeport stone Behr mill of the day, there are indications that Freeport machine co. was somehow associated with Stover manufacturing co. or other manufacturing interests of D.C. Stover. Outside of this engraving, little more is known of the Free port mill(grinding mill).

Meadows mills were very popular, being offered in various sizes and directed to the farm trade. for some years, the meadows mills were sold through international harvester dealers; this probably accounts for the substantial number of meadows mills still in existence. This advertisement of the 1920s shows many of the operating parts of the mill.

Stone Behr mills were used primarily for the reduction of corn to corn meal and wheat to flour. But as noted in these 1884 Munson bros, advertisement, it could also be used for grinding spices, cement and other materials. Stone Behr mills like this one were used into the 1880s, when the roller mill was developed by Edward p. Allis & Co. subsequently, the roller mill became the predominant method of flour milling and the stone Behr mill lost most of its dominance in the industry.
The Nordayke&Marmon mills had their beginnings during the 1850s, eventually becoming a predominant force in the milling industry. In addition to its large commercial mills and flour milling machinery, Nordyke&Marmon offered its Farm and plantation mill for decades. Built in 14-and 18-inch sizes ,this small mill used a cast-iron housing for the stones; a small 14-inch model could provide sufficient corn meal for several families in a very short time . in 1927, the company was purchased by Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co.

Outside of this 1910 advertisement, virtually nothing is known of Richmond city mill works. Apparently, the company had already been in operation for a time; nothing has been found relating to its subsequent activities. The planter's pride mill shown here featured a cast-iron casing, along with a massive cast-iron base plate.

From the 1890s comes this engraving of the monarch mill outfit. At the far left is a com crusher for reducing ear corn to small pieces. The material is conveyed to the stone Behr mill beneath; an elevator takes the ground material to a sacking stand, the company noted that in addition to its utility for grinding livestock feed; the sane mill would make an excellent grade of corn meal or graham flour. Sprout. Waldron co. was primarily involved in making commercial mills.

This well-known manufacturer of grain threshers and steam traction engines also built Stevens French Behr stone feed mills for some years; this one is from the 1890s. The grain left the hopper dropping through the eye of the fast (stationary) stone, making its way between the fast and the runner stones and finally emerging from the periphery as ground meal. An interesting sidelight is that millstones were dressed in many different ways; hundreds of patents were issued on this point.

In 1912, Stover announced its new stone Behr mill. This one was entirely of cast iron. as can be seen harem, the runner(revolving)stone was forced against the stationary stone by an adjustable thrust bearing at the outer end of the shaft. Millers were very careful not to permit the stones to rub against each other. Lest damage result. For reasons unknown, Stover built these mills(grinding mill) for only a short time, probably less than two years.

An 1887 advertisement illustrates the queen of the south mill. As made by straub machinery co., this was a typical vertical design, with the casing being carried by four large posts; the latter terminated as supports for the grain hopper. Patented already in the 1870s, this mill gained a wide reputation in its class.

By 1888, straub was offering the horizontal version of its flour mill. Calling it the "Germ of the south." this one used a cast=iron casing for the grinding stones, as well as a substantial cast-iron base to maintain shaft alignment. its advertising noted that the stones were "of solid French burr." this material was deemed the best for flour grinding and could be found only in France.
